Three Appreciations, and Some Sorrow

September 3, 2013
  1. I’m happy Owen enjoyed his first day in the Older Toddlers room at daycare.
  2. I’m grateful Chuck D is standing up to donate to the Philadelphia School District.
  3. I’m happy to start my new job tomorrow. (I might have buried the lede there.)

I’m sending good thoughts to the family of the Philly area student of my alma mater who was senselessly killed over the weekend.

My Neighborhood Is Best: The Barnes Foundation

August 29, 2013
  1. I’m happy my friends keep stepping up.
  2. I’m grateful I’ll have a chance to rest this weekend to recover from my cold.
  3. I’m happy I finally got to visit the Barnes Foundation.

Meg and I took a cultural vacation day today to visit the priceless works of art found at the Barnes Foundation. I’ll have to really start this with a confession: I lived in Wynnewood for three years, within a mile of the old location of the Barnes. I’ve also lived within a mile of the current location of the museum since it opened in the neighborhood last year.

This was my first time ever visiting the museum. Ever.

Pump Up the Volume; But Which Pump Should I Choose?

August 27, 2013
  1. I’m happy for another beautiful day in Philadelphia.
  2. I’m grateful we have another taco restaurant to choose in the neighborhood.
  3. I’m happy I was able to get all my parking matters taken care of quickly at the Philadelphia Parking Authority.

For 30 and a half years, I’ve had diabetes. First it was “juvenile diabetes.” The it was reclassified as “Type 1” diabetes. There are rumors it’s going to be reclassified again, but to me it’s always just been diabetes.

When I was first diagnosed, my treatment options were simple: regular and NPH insulins, taken at standard points throughout the day, with the amount of exercise or exertion I was going to do for the next 12 hours predicted. Then it was a matter of being able to be lucky, on some level or another, and having ample amounts of sugar available in case anything bad happened.

This is how I treated my diabetes (it’s one of the few things that, over the past 30 years, I’ve ever really be able to truly call my own) for the first 18 years. Then I was introduced to Lantus and Humulog (now Novolog), the immediate-acting synthetic insulins that have made a world’s difference to the way I’ve treated my diabetes for the last 12-plus years. With these insulins it’s been easier to keep a tighter control, knowing that I can make adjustments when I test my sugars at different points of the day; not having to put up with uncomfortable highs.

This and That: Tubes, Rooney, and Other Bits and Bobs

August 26, 2013
  1. I’m happy Owen’s cold is abating.
  2. I’m grateful we were able to get the title transfer on Sissy’s car taken care of so quickly.
  3. I’m happy my VW is finally in one piece after having the side trim installed today. More on that shortly.

Back about a month and a half ago, after taking Owen to his doctor’s office for a follow-up appointment, Meg, Owen and I started heading the approximately one mile return home at the end of a week. We turned from our doctor’s office on Hamilton Street in Philadelphia onto 20th, heading toward home. As I made the turn, a jackass in a pickup truck decided to not check his mirrors and blindly pulled out, hitting the passenger side of the car.

Three Appreciations

August 24, 2013
  1. I’m happy Kevin Sbraga has a kick-ass restaurant within three miles of our house, which Meg and I enjoyed on our date.
  2. I’m grateful my parents could watch Owen.
  3. I’m happy to have discovered “the Aviator,” which might be my new favorite dinner drink.

Football Friday: First Matchup With ‘The Special One’

August 23, 2013
  1. I’m grateful the Phillies are showing some spunk.
  2. I’m happy I’ve put together Owen’s new toy box, and no one got hurt.
  3. I’m happy Owen did a good job wishing Stewart a happy birthday.

Monday, Man United face Chelsea and their newly returned manager, “the special one,” Jose Mourinho. Chelsea and their fans seem thrilled, and the team has started off the season with two wins (a 2-0 win over Hull, and a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in a feisty encounter).

Things are awful cheery in West London.

Apparently, Chelski fans have forgotten Mourinho, not too long ago, had his heart set on following Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. (No matter what denials he presents, we all know it’s true, Jose.)

My Gi and Me

August 21, 2013
  1. I’m grateful the final piece of trim is in to complete the bodywork on our car, which a moron recently hit.
  2. I’m happy Owen learned how to bounce on the bed. (Seriously, it’s right up there with him learning how to jump in terms of cuteness.)
  3. I’m happy Alex is coming to clean the house today.

My Neighborhood Is Best: Boathouse Row
