Happiness Friday

August 9, 2013
  1. I’m happy for the weekend.
  2. I’m thankful for unwatched episodes of Orange Is the New Black.
  3. I’m thankful for a wonderful and uplifting note I just received from my cousin Bernadette.

Meg and I started watching Orange Is the New Black, as you could probably tell from my statements above. Four episodes in, and I think we’re both enjoying it. This new addition is going along with The Bridge, which I’m also loving, to this point.

Everyone’s writing about the final season of Breaking Bad, and I’d like to do a deep dive and really binge watch that, but can’t find the time to do so. I told someone recently that I didn’t think I could get Meg to watch it because of the violence in the series. The person I spoke with looked at me, thought out loud (ignoring my opinions and experience along the way), and told me that the series is not, in fact, violent, and that we should watch it.

I just watched a video on YouTube that showed a guy being strangled using a bike lock, the star of the series blowing up a room with fulminated mercury, two drug dealers being run over by a Pontiac Aztec minivan, a Mexican assassin having his head blown off (literally) by a dum-dum bullet, and Giancarlo Esposito being reduced to half a skeleton by a bomb.

I think I’ll trust my instincts, and not the opinions of some people.

This weekend I think we will take a trip to the Philadelphia Natural History Museum, where Owen will get to see the dinosaurs, the stuffed moose (he loves it), and my favorite exhibit, the butterfly room. A new bug exhibit opens today, so there might be a crowd, but fortunately we’ll have nothing but time.

Sunday we will attend the memorial for Pops (Owen has continued saying “Bye bye, Pops” through this morning’s drive to daycare), and I think I’ll attempt my first beer can chicken at some point, too.

Happy weekend to all my friends and followers. The Hegartys will send lots of good thoughts out to you all.
